SV 10.16- Scion
Well, hmm. We get our Luthors back, and some confusion, and some SV-cramming-in-DC to round out the series.
So what was up with Tess in that opening scene? She was unrecognizably nervous and unsure and afraid. For someone who always faces things dead on, her uncertainty with telling Clark about Alexonner was out of character.
As for the kid, he’s a really good actor. He creeped me the hell out last time with his cold Luthorness, but he was a normal kid in the beginning here, then became something else entirely with the red!K. I wish he were taller or more burly like the Superboy we all know and love.
Also, can someone confirm his backstory for me? I understood it that Lex knew his clones didn’t live after a certain point because of the mitosis/degeneration/aging quickly, so he used some of Clark’s DNA to stabilize it, but obviously Alexander aged rapidly and was becoming sick, so was it his powers kicking in that ended the illness? And why does he have the heat vision already? Getting all the powers at once must really suck, as it took Clark years to develop them as we watched (the hearing Alexonner is using not developing for Clark until season 3).
It really is nice to have Lionel back to his recognizable MB self, only thinking of his empire and who he has to kill to get it. He’s just such a sleazeball. It really connects this last season to the first few seasons of the show. I think someone watching only the first and ninth seasons would be confused, but having this final one come back full circle is really nice.
Lionel wishing to have Lex back at the end… So typical. You throw away something and then you truly realize how important it was a short while later. But who’s to say this Lionel and our normal Lex would have gotten along the way he envisions? Them having their own pissing contest would buy the League time to take them down.
I also have to add that I’ve never wanted to slash Conner and Bart more than I want to now! Of course, Alexonner is supposed to be younger than he looks, I think, and Bart is supposed to be how old in this universe, if he first showed up in season 4 and close to Clark’s age? So that would be icky. Too bad; they’d be cute if it weren’t all pedo.
Seeing this episode really makes me feel that Fortune was horribly out of place. It’s hard enough for SV to maintain the momentum of a story arc, but to interrupt the Luthor/Alexander storyline in such a way that it felt like we were missing a whole episode where Tess handles Alexander becoming even more ill, and learning about his DNA and trying to handle it on her own, etc, etc wasn’t good. There needed to be more in this episode to connect it back to Beacon, at least for Alexander’s stuff. It seemed rushed. And to interrupt the Luthors for a poorly executed bachelor/ette party story! So out of place.
Speaking of Fortune, I read afterward that it was Chloe’s last episode. Her character has bothered me over the years, but she could have had a better sendoff than an episode that was only partially about her! And she had to wear that stupid dress for so much of it! Especially ending it with her marrying Oliver while wasted; wasn’t there an entire episode in season 4 where Clark got trashed on red!k and got married and got reamed out by his parents at the end for damaging the sanctity of marriage for doing it so rushed and wasted? (…the question is rhetorical; I remember the episode well) I guess it’s better that Oliver is older than everyone and Chloe isn’t a kid anymore; way too many super early marriages happening on this show. At least it seems that way to me with Clark and Lana and even Chloe and Jimmy. And even Clark and Lois: how long exactly have they been dating?
I guess I wish the Alexonner stuff was handled more smoothly; he’s a really interesting character, less so now that he’s just Conner and we all know him. There just felt like too much of a jump between Tess trying to kill him and Tess bringing him to the farm to be trained by Clark. I do like Lois’s reactions to it all, because she’s totally right about the situation being far from normal yet she knows she needs to handle it for Clark and Conner’s sake. And Clark knowing he needs to help the kid and starting him with the training exercises his dad helped him with; it was a nice return to the early days when we all were really enjoying the show.
But flannel? Really? When’s he gonna get the glasses? And isn’t Clark supposed to be wearing glasses? Maybe not here because he was basically only on the farm, but in Fortune he wasn’t wearing the glasses out for the party.
