I thought this was a really good episode. There was more genuine emotion elicited from me in this one episode probably than in all of the last few seasons.
First of all, when Tess walked into her office and Lionel was there? Totally effing creepy. Those moments of confusion as to what I was watching and when it took place, only to be answered by it being the Lionel from the other world… It didn’t even bother me that they didn’t explain how he made it through from that other place. It’s a little annoying, but I’m not going to get hung up on it. It’s just awesomely creepy that he’s back, and back as being evil (or at least more MB-like than his last few seasons).
And then when we’re watching Martha give her speech and there are the gunshots… You really feel for Clark and Lois listening to her get shot. I felt maybe it’s unfortunate that this came so close to the Arizona shooting, but the timing could have been much worse.
Lois was good as usual in here, being the doting fiancée and future daughter-in-law yet kickass reporter striving to do her job. I wish they’d let her let those muffins sit a while longer so we could pretend they were fresh from a hot oven. I really think Lois is the only regular character where I haven’t been conscious of Erica *acting*; she just *is* Lois. She doesn’t oversell it the way some of the other actors do.
To see the older Alexander… cold dude is *cold*. There is *nothing* in those eyes. He’s cute, too, it’s too bad he has all of Lex’s old hate (warranted though it may be) making him that way. That he’d shoot Martha and join Lionel… Yeesh.
Oliver walking into his office at LuthorCorp and finding Lionel and Alexander there… He took that a little too well, don’t you think? I’d be freaked the hell out, with losing my job being the least of my concerns.
I’m really shocked they burned down the mansion. Nothing says “the show is over” like destroying one of the main sets (think Sunnydale High in Buffy—there was no going back to high school!). I wonder if they’ll have Lionel magically have it rebuilt in the next episode.
Especially by having Alexander do it… I yelped when he hit Martha, and couldn’t believe he was found by Lionel, brought into LuthorCorp (as another illegitimate child?), brought to the Mansion, and turned on him all in the same day. His words about Lionel choosing Martha’s son over him in both worlds… So true and so damn sad. Lionel really dug his own grave in this world (being that he offed Lex too soon in his own world).
And when Alexander is in the loft, of course knowing that Tess and Clark would be there because where hell else does anyone go in this town, creepy. But Clark got through to him about having Tess. For all the good that’ll do for him, as we saw at the end.
I knew that Clark was going to rescue Lionel from the fire, but I LOLed *so* hard when he throws him down the stairs while doing so. Just the way it contrasted with the way he set down Martha, and my expectation that he was going to set him down softly too… Man, that was funny.
And Chloe showing Clark all the civilians’ testimonies about loving the Blur and looking up to him… So sweet. Maybe a little heavy-handed, but effective in showing support for the Blur, and getting us viewers of the show primed for Superman to show up sometime soon. And then watching them get the news of the election and the VRA being repealed… Very moving, very well done (if not a little heavy-handed).
Clark deciding to hide in plain sight with “glasses and a bad haircut”… Cool. Though I still think it’s gonna be hard to hide that handsome face behind nerd glasses and bad hair when everyone knows Clark Kent is a hottie. Maybe back 70 years ago it made sense in comic books, but with all the face time Clark gets as a reporter I think it will be hard to make it make sense. Bad enough he had to start wearing that black Blur jacket because Clark always wore red and blue.
And Tess at the end… Poor woman. She promises the kid she’ll love him and protect him, but she knows she has to kill him because Alexander is the ultimate bad seed with all that hate in that hormonal teen/aging body… And then she can’t kill him because the needle won’t penetrate his skin?! Crazy! And why is Alexander sick and losing his memory? Hmm.
Overall, I’m glad the VRA storyline was resolved because I thought it was dragging things down a bit (I think it was rushed, and Oliver was stupid for outing himself). And I’m extremely glad that they brought the Luthor storyline back; as bored as season 7 Lex stories made me, I’m that interested in the Luthor/Tess/Alexander/Lionel storylines now.
Another good season 10 episode. *nodnod* Though the name of the ep being said in the show twice? We *get* it. Clark is a beacon of hope.

As I've said before, without you...
I hate to sound negative but for me SV is like a love affair way past time to end. I am actually planning to look at the last episode because I do want to see Lex's return even though I know he will be the big EVOL.
Re: As I've said before, without you...
I hope my review was enough for you to follow along.
The show definitely needs to end. I'm surprised it's lasted this long; if the previous four seasons were like the current one I wouldn't be. They're really working toward getting Clark to embrace his destiny and get out there and be Superman, and it's been way too long in coming.
I'm worried about Lex only because the actors playing his younger clones don't look enough like MR for it to be believable that he's back. Maybe it will be a flashback sequence or something? And they need to slow down the aging if Lex is going to be around to be President when Clark is older.
