Mirrors

Went to see Mirrors today.

Freaked me out.

Of course, mirrors already frighten me a little, abused as they are in scary movies. I won't go into detail in an unlocked post.

But anyway. I knew nothing of the movie going in, such as it being (yet another Hollywood) remake of an Asian horror movie. I find that not having any preconceived notions of a movie helps a lot with enjoying it.

So, I found this movie disturbing.

Good pace, okay music, good cinematography, some genuinely creepy moments. Keifer doesn't do anything for me, but he wasn't bad.

There's debate about the ending over at the imdb, but it gave me a bit of a shiver in the theater, so I'd say it was effective.

And the movie takes kind of a weird twist partway through, kind of a cliche one, but they kinda made it work.

There's one horribly gory/horrifying/unnecessary graphically disgusting scene, but just the one. ...to me, anyway. My gore-o-meter is a little skewed.

Anyway, Mirrors gets the Quiet Tiger Stamp of Approval. I'm really rather glad I saw it on a sunny afternoon and not late at night.

The advertising budget seems to have been small, too, not much work put into promoting it. And there wasn't a screening for critics pre-release, so there hasn't been anything at all, good or bad, to read.

So, it's not just you. :)

I'm in NYC for a few weeks and I've seen lots of trailers for it on TV. It's good to know that my sense (arrived at only via the trailer) that Sutherland wasn't important to the movie seems to be correct. I thought it would be all about the mother and son.

There have been a few TV spots, too, but no huge viral campaign, posters, anything like that. They didn't even let critics review it for the newspapers before it came out.

The whole movie was about Kiefer; he was in nearly ever scene.
