OTP
OTP. One True Pairing. This is just a brief analysis of what that means to me in the fandoms I mainly read, and who belongs to who.
So. One True Pairing. A couple destined to be together?
We all know I'm a CLexer. Clark and Lex belong together.
But Lex also belongs to Bruce. But Bruce also belongs to Dick. But Dick belongs to Tim. But Clark also belongs to Bruce. Well, Superman and Batman belong together, that's sort of the same thing. And don't forget Wally; Bruce and Wally belong to each other as well.
For an issue-ridden, emotionally stunted guy, Bruce sure belongs with a lot of people.
Back to Tim. He also belongs to Kon. And Bart. But don't Kon and Bart belong to each other as well? What about just a threesome with those boys?
And then there is Dick and Garth. And Dick and Roy, who I've just started getting into.
And there are a few really good cases for Clark and Dick. But this only works for me if it's established that Clark and Dick are about the same age, or Clark is younger than Dick.
If I had to pick a true OTP, I don't think I could. Clark needs Lex. Who needs Bruce. Who needs Dick. Who needs Tim. Who needs Kon. Who needs Bart. If Bart needed Clark, this could be a nice circle. Instead it's just one giant orgy, with Wally, Garth, and Roy all mixed in.
Not that I'm complaining.
Maybe if Clark and Lex were together, and Kon and Tim (since Kon is Lex and Clark's child, anyway, as canon dictates), then Bruce could have Dick. But if Bruce had Wally instead, then Dick could have Garth. But where would that leave Bart and Roy?
Maybe Tim and Kon could work with Bart, too. And then that could lead to Dick and Garth and Roy.
But Dick and Tim need each other, as two people who have survived something no one else has can relate to each other. Then Kon and Bart can be together, but I really don't see them working without Tim in the mix somehow. Maybe Tim starts out with Dick, then moves on to Kon. And Bruce starts out with Lex, then moves onto Dick. Then Wally. And while Tim is with Kon and Bart, Dick moves on to Garth or Roy.
So, I suppose in the land of OTP and OT3, Lex and Bruce are the first OTP. They break up, and Lex meets Clark, and Bruce takes in Dick. In a fit of jealousy, or something, Clark and Bruce sleep together for a while. But then Clark and Lex get back together. Bruce and Dick have a go for awhile once Dick is Nightwing, but there are just too many issues there, and they seek solice with other people, mainly Wally and Tim respectively. But Dick and Tim can't possibly work, so Tim moves on to Kon and Bart, while Dick goes back to Garth and/or Roy, having been with them for a while in his teens, before he paired up with Bruce.
Of course, this ignores all canon relationships, such as Dick/Kori, Dick/Helena, Dick/Babs (Dick really gets all the chicks, doesn't he?), Kon/Cassie, Tim/Steph, Bruce/Selina, Lex/Helen, Clark/Lois, and anyone else. Which I'm perfectly fine with because the boys deserve better.
I guess they all do belong to each other, but at different life stages based on who needs what and whom they can get it from. I actually feel better now that I've worked this all out for myself. I am such a nerd.
